Choosing between filler and a collagen stimulator
Two different things get called “filler” and they behave differently.
Hyaluronic acid filler works the day you have it, can be dissolved if you dislike it, and lasts nine to eighteen months depending on the area. It is the right choice for a defined change in a specific place, and for anyone who wants to see it before committing.
Collagen stimulators such as Lanluma build volume over three to six months, last around two years, and give a more diffuse result that reads as your own tissue. Better for significant volume loss across the face, but you have to be patient and it cannot be reversed.
Where the issue is skin quality rather than volume — dull, crepey or dehydrated skin — neither is right, and Profhilo or polynucleotides at £300 will do more.
What we will tell you that some clinics will not
Placement matters more than volume. Deep injection onto bone in the right positions restores projection with surprisingly little product. Superficially filling the hollow you can see takes far more and looks it. The overfilled look is almost always a placement problem, not a quantity problem.
Filler does not lift. If there is real laxity along the jaw, filler camouflages it and there is a point at which more product starts looking like more product. Where that is the case we will say so rather than book a second syringe.
Ask any clinic about hyaluronidase. Vascular occlusion is rare but it is time-critical, and it needs the drug and someone who can recognise it in the room. It is the single most useful question you can ask before booking filler anywhere, and almost nobody asks it.
