What does the belly button piercing repair surgery do?
This belly button or umbilical surgery is used to repair the tract and holes made during a belly button piercing.
The procedure is performed in our CQC registered clinic by our plastic surgeons. The holes from your existing piercing are closed. This is similar to having an earlobe repair procedure.
What are the risks of the belly button piercing repair?
When undergoing belly button piercing repair Cheshire & Manchester patients receive local anaesthetic. The procedure involves removing the existing piercing tract and suturing the old piercing holes closed. The potential risks with the procedure include:
Bruising, Swelling, Bleeding
It is normal to get some swelling after any treatment and this usually takes a few days to settle. This is often due to the local anaesthetic that is injected. Some patients may also experience bruising or bleeding which is can be related to medication being taken. Some medicines such as aspirin and herbal supplements can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising.
Scarring
When we perform any surgery there will be permanent scars. This procedure will result in permanent scars where the piercing holes used to be. In some individuals, scars may become red, lumpy or raised which is sometimes referred to as hypertrophic or keloid scars.
Wound Healing Problems
Most people should heal without any problems but in some individuals there may be wound healing issues. These people will often have an underlying issue that results in delayed healing or risks factors such as smoking.
Local Anaesthetic Risks
It is very uncommon to experience any problems when having a procedure under local anaesthetic. Extremely rarely, patients may have an allergic reaction to the local anaesthesia.
Infection
Infections are uncommon following these procedures although they may occur. Usually these would improve with use of oral antibiotics.
Numbness
Any surgical procedure can result in change in sensation to the skin in the surrounding area. This is due to some of the sensory nerve being cut during the procedure. This change in sensation may be permanent or temporary.

The aim is a navel that looks like a navel again rather than one with a visible track through it.

What the procedure involves
The exact technique depends on what the piercing has left behind, which is why the consultation matters more than it might seem for a small operation.
- Excision of the piercing tract — the epithelialised channel the jewellery ran through is removed. Simply letting a hole close does not work once the tract has lined itself with skin, which is why old piercings stay visible.
- Repair and closure — the edges are closed in layers, with the scar placed where the natural contour of the navel hides it.
- Scar revision — where a previous piercing has left a thickened or keloid scar, that is addressed at the same time. See also keloid scar removal.
- Local anaesthetic — the area is numbed, so you are awake and comfortable throughout. There is no general anaesthetic and no hospital stay.

Will there be a scar?
Yes — any surgery leaves a scar, and it would be dishonest to say otherwise. The point of having it done by a plastic surgeon is where that scar sits and how it is closed. Placed in the natural fold and contour of the navel it is usually very difficult to see once mature. Scars take up to a year to settle and fade, and we will go through scar care with you.
How long does the procedure take?
The operation itself typically takes under an hour. Allow longer for your appointment overall, since the area needs to be marked, numbed and dressed. You go home the same day.
Is it done under general anaesthetic?
No. It is done under local anaesthetic, so you are awake but the area is completely numb. You will feel pressure and movement but not pain. If you are anxious about that, say so at consultation and we will talk it through.
What is the recovery like?
Most people take it easy for a few days and return to desk work quickly. You will be asked to avoid the gym, heavy lifting, swimming and anything that stretches or rubs the area for a few weeks while the wound heals, and to keep the dressing dry initially. Full instructions are given in writing before you leave.
Can I get my belly button re-pierced afterwards?
We would advise against re-piercing through repaired tissue. The repair relies on the scar maturing undisturbed, and a new piercing through it risks the same stretching or migration happening again, usually worse. If re-piercing is something you want in future, tell us at consultation before you commit to the repair.
Is belly button piercing repair available on the NHS?
Generally no. It is considered a cosmetic procedure, so it is not routinely funded, which is why almost everyone has it done privately. If there is an ongoing infection or a medical complication, that is different and should be seen by your GP first.
