What is a mummy makeover?
“Mummy makeover” is not a single operation. It is a term for combining two or more procedures that address the changes pregnancy and breastfeeding commonly leave behind, carried out under one anaesthetic so there is one recovery rather than several.
Most plans include some combination of an abdominoplasty to remove loose skin and repair separated abdominal muscles, liposuction to reshape the waist and flanks, and breast surgery — a augmentation, a lift, or both — to restore volume or position. What goes into yours depends entirely on what actually bothers you, which is what the consultation is for.
Diastasis recti: the part that is often missed
Many women are told their abdomen is “just loose skin” when the underlying problem is separation of the rectus muscles down the midline, which happens during pregnancy as the abdominal wall stretches. That separation is why the tummy still domes or bulges when you sit up, even after the weight has gone and even in women who train hard.
No amount of exercise closes a significant separation, and liposuction does nothing for it — it can make it look worse by removing the fat that was disguising it. Repair of the muscle is part of an abdominoplasty and is assessed properly at consultation. See our page on diastasis recti.
When is the right time?
- After your family is complete. A further pregnancy will undo an abdominal repair. If you may have another child, we will usually advise waiting.
- After breastfeeding has finished — generally at least three to six months, so the breasts have settled to their resting size and shape.
- At a stable weight you can realistically maintain, rather than at the bottom of a diet you are still on.
- When you have help at home. This is the practical one people underestimate. You cannot lift a toddler for several weeks after an abdominoplasty, and the recovery is much harder without support.
Recovery
A combined operation means a single recovery, but not a short one. Expect around two weeks before you feel reasonably mobile, six weeks before lifting and exercise resume, and three to six months before swelling has fully settled and you see the final shape.
You will wear compression garments, sleep in a slightly bent position after abdominal muscle repair, and need someone to manage school runs and small children for the first fortnight at least. We would far rather plan that with you in advance than have you discover it afterwards.
Risks and complications
Combining procedures means combining risks, and a longer operation carries a higher anaesthetic and thromboembolic risk than a shorter one. Your surgeon will discuss whether doing everything at once is safe and sensible for you, or whether staging it over two operations is the better plan. Recognised complications include bleeding, infection, seroma, wound healing problems, thickened scars, asymmetry, altered sensation, and dissatisfaction with the aesthetic result. All of this is covered in detail before you consent.

Mummy makeover: common questions
How much does a mummy makeover cost?
It is quoted individually because no two plans are the same — the cost depends on which procedures are combined, the theatre and anaesthetic time and the aftercare. Combining procedures is usually less expensive than having them separately, because you pay once for theatre and anaesthetic. You will receive an itemised written quote after consultation.
How long is the recovery?
Around two weeks before you are reasonably mobile and back to light activity, six weeks before lifting and structured exercise, and three to six months before the final shape is settled. If an abdominal muscle repair is included, the first fortnight is the most restrictive part and you will need help at home.
Can I have it done if I want more children?
You can, but we would usually advise against it. A further pregnancy stretches the abdominal wall again and will undo a muscle repair, and breastfeeding changes the breasts again. Most surgeons, including ours, will suggest waiting until your family is complete so you only go through this once.
How long after giving birth should I wait?
Generally at least six months after delivery, and at least three to six months after you finish breastfeeding, so that your weight, your abdominal wall and your breasts have settled. Rushing it produces a result planned around a body that is still changing.
Can everything be done in one operation?
Often, but not always, and the decision is about safety rather than convenience. Longer operations carry higher anaesthetic and clot risks. Your surgeon will tell you honestly whether combining everything is appropriate for you or whether staging it is safer, and that answer depends on your health, your BMI and the extent of the surgery.
Will a mummy makeover fix my separated muscles?
Yes, if an abdominoplasty with muscle repair is part of the plan — that is exactly what the repair does. Liposuction alone will not, and neither will exercise once the separation is significant. This is assessed at consultation, and it is worth asking specifically about because it is often overlooked.
Will I have scars?
Yes. An abdominoplasty scar runs low across the abdomen, placed to sit below underwear and swimwear, and there is usually a small scar around the navel. Breast surgery scars depend on which procedure is done. They fade over twelve to eighteen months but are permanent, and we will show you where they will sit before you decide.
Where would I be seen?
