Most people need two to four sessions spaced four to six weeks apart. Facial veins usually clear faster than leg veins — that is a difference in vessel type, not in effort.
What to expect, honestly
Treatment takes ten to thirty minutes depending on the area. The sensation is a sharp flick against the skin, cooled continuously, and most people manage without anaesthetic.
Afterwards the treated vessels usually darken or go grey and the surrounding skin is pink for a few hours to a couple of days. Some vessels disappear during the session itself. Occasionally there is bruising, particularly on legs and particularly with settings high enough to clear larger vessels — this settles over one to two weeks.
The realistic expectation for facial thread veins is substantial clearance over two to three sessions. Legs are harder: leg veins are often fed by larger vessels below the surface, and if we treat the visible ones without addressing what feeds them they come back. If your assessment suggests that, we will say so and point you towards a vascular opinion rather than selling you a course that will disappoint you.
New veins can form over time, particularly with rosacea or sun exposure. This is management rather than cure, and most patients come back for a top-up every year or two.
Suitability and aftercare
Pulsed dye laser targets the red pigment in blood, so it works best where there is contrast between the vessel and the surrounding skin. Recent tanning, whether from the sun or a sunbed, means we will postpone. A test patch is done first in every case.
It is avoided in pregnancy, over recently treated skin, and where you have taken systemic acne medication in the previous six months. If you have an active infection or cold sore in the area we will reschedule.
Afterwards: no hot baths, sauna, steam or heavy exercise for 48 hours; daily SPF 50 on the treated area; and no picking at any crusting. That is the whole list.
