What are Chemical Peels?

At CLNQ in Cheshire & Manchester chemical peels unlock a new level of radiance by gently exfoliating the outer layers of skin. For a rejuvenated complexion, consider Glycolic and Salicylic Peels, each offering unique benefits:

At £77, a peel is the least expensive way into treatment at CLNQ — and it is carried out in a medical clinic by trained aesthetic therapists, with a doctor on site, rather than in a salon.

For medical-grade pigmentation protocols see Cosmelan and Dermalan, which are a different class of treatment and priced separately.

Which Peel Do You Actually Need?

Peels are categorised by how deep they work, and depth is the whole decision.

Superficial peels (£60–£90). Enzymatic, mandelic, salicylic, glycolic and azelaic. They work within the epidermis. You get brightness, smoother texture and reduced congestion, with a day or two of mild flaking at most. These are the ones done in courses, because the effect is cumulative — one peel is a facial, six peels are a treatment.

Medium-depth peels (£150–£350). TCA reaches the upper dermis. It does considerably more for textural scarring, deeper pigmentation and fine lines, and it asks more of you in return: visible peeling for five to seven days, and strict sun avoidance afterwards.

Choosing by concern rather than by name:

  • Oily or acne-prone — salicylic, because it is oil-soluble and gets into the pore
  • Pigmentation or melasma — melanostop, or a medical protocol such as Cosmelan
  • Redness and reactivity — azelan
  • Darker skin types — mandelic first, because the larger molecule penetrates more slowly and evenly, which matters for pigmentation risk
  • Dullness and texture — glycolic or enzymatic
  • Textural scarring — TCA, or microneedling instead

If you have never had a peel, we will start you superficial regardless of what you came in asking for.

Peels And Darker Skin Tones

This deserves its own section, because it is where peels most often go wrong.

In Fitzpatrick types IV to VI, an over-aggressive peel can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — a dark mark that can take months to fade and is harder to treat than the thing you came in for. It is not a reason to avoid peels. It is a reason to be treated by someone who adjusts depth, agent and pre-treatment to your skin rather than running the same protocol on everybody.

In practice that means starting with mandelic or enzymatic, priming the skin beforehand where appropriate, going slowly across a course, and being uncompromising about daily SPF 50 afterwards. Microneedling is mechanical rather than chemical and is often the safer first choice for textural concerns in darker skin.

What Happens During A Chemical Peel?

What can Glycolic Acid Peels do for my skin?

Glycolic acid, a superstar in the world of skincare, isn’t just fancy jargon. It’s a gentle yet powerful alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) found in sugarcane and cleverly replicated in labs. Its secret weapon? It’s tiny size. This allows it to effortlessly penetrate your skin, working wonders from within. But what magic does it perform? First, it acts as a gentle exfoliator, whisking away dull, dead skin cells to reveal a smoother, brighter you. There is no need for harsh scrubbing, just a fresh start for your skin. But glycolic acid’s talents don’t stop there. The result? Even-toned, radiant skin that whispers youth and vitality. If you dream of a brighter tomorrow, glycolic acid might be the key to better skin.

What can Salicylic Acid Peels do for my skin?

Salicylic acid, a naturally occurring beta hydroxy acid (BHA) found in willow bark and wintergreen leaves, holds a prominent position in the dermatological world. Its synthetically produced version, boasting identical properties, further expands its accessibility. Similar to its alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) counterpart, glycolic acid, salicylic acid possesses potent exfoliating capabilities, effectively shedding the outermost layer of the epidermis to reveal a smoother, revitalized complexion.

However, this chemical peel has a defining characteristic that lies in its lipophilic nature, enabling it to penetrate deeper into the sebaceous follicles and dissolve excess sebum. This oil-regulating action makes salicylic acid a formidable weapon against clogged pores contributing to acne formation. Salicylic acid exhibits mild anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, effectively quelling inflammation and combating acne-causing bacteria. These synergistic actions render it an invaluable tool for managing acne vulgaris, particularly in individuals with oily or hyperpigmentation-prone skin.
