It is a common condition that is thought to affect 1% of the population. What areas can Botox be used for to help sweating?
The most common area for Botox treatment is the armpit (axilla). The other areas where it can be used include the forehead, palms, and soles of feet.
Does it completely stop sweating?
Botox for hyperhidrosis does not completely stop sweating but it will reduce it. Studies have shown that most patients will notice from 75-90% reduction in sweating. The research papers show that this treatment has a very positive impact on quality of life after treatment.
How long it lasts for?
The botulinum toxin treatment for hyperhidrosis is a temporary treatment and generally lasts up to about 3-4 months. In some it may last less and in some longer. Individual response is variable.
How does botulinum toxin work for hyperhidrosis?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox®, blocks the nerves supplying the eccrine glands responsible for sweating. It can be used to treat localized areas of excessive sweating such as the armpits, palms, or soles of feet.

Primary hyperhidrosis is sweating well beyond what the body needs for temperature control. It is not a hygiene problem and it is not anxiety, though it causes plenty of both. It affects roughly one in twenty people and most never mention it to anyone.

Treatment blocks the signal from nerve to sweat gland in the treated area. It takes effect over three to seven days and lasts six to nine months for most people — longer than the same treatment used cosmetically, because the doses are higher. Underarms are the most reliably treated area; hands and feet are more painful to treat and give shorter-lived results.
Treatment is doctor-performed and takes about twenty minutes. There is no downtime.
What we check first. Sweating that started suddenly, happens mainly at night, affects the whole body evenly, or comes with weight loss or fever is not primary hyperhidrosis and needs investigating rather than treating. Thyroid problems, certain medications and hormonal change all cause it. A blood panel is a reasonable first step if the pattern fits, and we would rather find a cause than treat around one.
