How Does Glutathione Work?
Glutathione is a tripeptide — glycine, cysteine and glutamic acid — produced in every cell of the body. Its job is to donate electrons to unstable molecules, neutralising free radicals before they damage DNA, proteins and cell membranes. It also regenerates vitamins C and E, and supports the liver’s detoxification pathways.
Levels fall with age, and are depleted further by alcohol, smoking, poor sleep, chronic illness, intense exercise and sustained stress.
Its effect on skin tone works through a different route. Glutathione inhibits tyrosinase, the enzyme that converts tyrosine into melanin, and shifts melanin synthesis away from darker eumelanin toward lighter phaeomelanin. That is the mechanism behind its use as a brightening treatment.
Taken orally, glutathione is largely broken down in the gut before it reaches circulation. Injection is used precisely because it bypasses that.
What Are The Benefits Of Glutathione Injections?
Skin tone and clarity. The best-supported cosmetic use. Patients typically report a more even tone, reduced dullness and a softening of post-inflammatory pigmentation over a course of treatments. Results are gradual and require maintenance — melanin production resumes when treatment stops.
Antioxidant support. Glutathione is central to how the body handles oxidative stress, which is one of the recognised mechanisms of biological ageing. This is why it appears in longevity protocols alongside NAD+ and other interventions.
Liver and detoxification support. Glutathione conjugation is a core phase II detoxification pathway.
Immune function. Lymphocytes depend on adequate glutathione to function properly.
What we will not claim. Glutathione is not a skin-lightening treatment in the sense of changing your natural complexion, and it should not be sold as one. It is not a treatment for melasma on its own — melasma needs a combination approach, and CLNQ uses Cosmelan and Dermalan for that. High-dose intravenous glutathione for skin whitening has been the subject of safety warnings from regulators in several countries where it has been used unsupervised and at extreme doses. We dose it conservatively and clinically, and we will decline to treat if what you are asking for is unsafe.
Who Is Suitable For Glutathione Injections?
Consider it if you have dull, uneven or sun-damaged skin tone; post-inflammatory pigmentation from acne; a high oxidative-stress lifestyle; or you are building a longevity protocol and want antioxidant support with a measurable rationale.
It is not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding, if you have asthma that is poorly controlled (sulphur-containing compounds can be a trigger in susceptible people), or if you have a known allergy to any component. Tell us about every medication and supplement you take.
Glutathione Prices
| Treatment | Price |
|---|---|
| Glutathione shot — single dose | £100 |
| Glutathione shot — double dose | £150 |
| Skin Brightening IV | £200 |
| Intravenous infusions | from £150 |
Injection or drip? The shot takes minutes and suits maintenance and people building a routine — the practical choice for most patients. An intravenous infusion delivers glutathione alongside a wider nutrient profile over 30 to 45 minutes, and is the option most often chosen as part of a longevity plan. We recommend one over the other based on what you are trying to achieve rather than on what costs more.
How many sessions? For skin tone, a typical course is weekly or fortnightly for six to ten sessions, then maintenance monthly. Most people notice a difference in clarity somewhere between the third and sixth session. For antioxidant and longevity support, the schedule is set against your biomarkers — CLNQ Life longevity plans start at £500 for the Baseline assessment.
What Are The Risks?
At the doses used clinically, glutathione is well tolerated. Reported effects include:
- injection site soreness, redness or bruising
- transient nausea or lightheadedness
- headache
- abdominal cramping, occasionally
- rarely, rash or allergic reaction
- rarely, worsening of asthma symptoms in susceptible people
Reported harms in the literature are overwhelmingly associated with very high intravenous doses given without medical supervision, often through unregulated channels. That is a strong argument for having it done in a clinic with a doctor, and a stronger one against buying it online.
Glutathione FAQs
How much do glutathione injections cost at CLNQ?
A glutathione shot is £100 for a single dose and £150 for a double dose. Skin Brightening IV is £200 and intravenous infusions start from £150.
How long before I see a difference in my skin?
Most patients notice improved clarity between the third and sixth session. It is gradual by nature.
Do the results last if I stop?
No. Melanin production returns to its baseline once treatment stops, so maintaining the effect means maintaining the treatment. Daily SPF makes a substantial difference to how long the benefit holds.
Is glutathione safe?
At clinical doses, with appropriate screening, it has a good safety record. The safety concerns raised internationally relate to very high unsupervised intravenous dosing. We dose conservatively and screen first.
Can I take glutathione tablets instead?
Oral glutathione is poorly absorbed — most is broken down before it reaches the bloodstream. If you prefer an oral route, supporting your own production with certain amino acid precursors and vitamin C is a more rational approach, and we can advise on it.
Can I combine it with other skin treatments?
Yes. It works well alongside skin brightening, HydraFacial from £150 and microneedling from £190. For melasma specifically, Cosmelan or Dermalan is the more appropriate primary treatment.
