There are a number of different ways of performing a facelift procedure. These include the mini facelift which is less invasive and can be performed under a local anaesthetic. The full face lift usually requires a general anaesthetic. This can be done using a number of techniques such as the SMAS lift or Deep Plane Facelift.
The first type of face lift is a mini facelift which involves a shorter scar in front and behind the ear. A mini facelift has limited undermining of the skin, there we get a little improvement in the jowl area and removal of some skin excess. This is a short lasting option but can be performed under a local anaesthetic with less downtime.
This type of face lift procedure involves a longer scar in front and behind the ear but extending into the hairline. A full facelift lifts up more of the skin and addresses the SMAS, which is the deeper layer underneath the skin, and pulls that up to give a better, longer lasting result. The SMAS layer can be tightened using a number of techniques such as SMASectomy or SMAS plication. These mean that either that part of the SMAS may be removed or the SMAS is stitched onto itself to tighten it.
This technique is a type of face lift which is the same as a full facelift. In this procedure the SMAS layer is lifted and dissection is performed under the SMAS. This helps improve the lower face and neck more. The SMAS is then stitched when it is more mobile to help lift the face and neck.
