Skin Tag Removal
Skin Tag Removal Manchester and Cheshire
Skin tags are one of the most common—and most annoying—skin concerns we see in our clinics. They’re harmless, soft growths that tend to appear in areas of friction such as the neck, underarms, groin, eyelids and beneath the breasts. While they’re not dangerous, they can catch on clothing and jewellery, become irritated, or simply bother you cosmetically. The good news is that skin tags can be removed quickly and safely in clinic, with minimal downtime.
Skin tags are benign, flesh or pigmented lesions that hang from the skin. They are commonly found around the neck, armpits or groin areas. To learn more about skin tag removal Manchester & Cheshire book a consultation.
Skin Tags
Skin tags (the medical term is acrochordons) are small, soft, flesh-coloured growths that hang off the skin. They’re made of normal skin and collagen fibres and are supplied by tiny blood vessels. They are benign, meaning non-cancerous. Many people develop them with age; they’re particularly common from mid-life onwards.
Typical features include:
Soft, wobbly, pedunculated (on a little stalk)
Same colour as your skin or slightly darker
Painless unless irritated
Found where skin rubs: neck, armpits, groin, beneath breasts, eyelids
Skin tags are different from moles, viral warts, seborrhoeic keratoses and cysts, which have distinct appearances and sometimes different treatments. If we’re not 100% certain it’s a skin tag on examination, we will advise appropriate assessment or histology (lab testing) for safety.
Skin tag removal options at CLNQ
We offer several precise, medical-grade methods. The best approach depends on the size, number, location and whether the tag has a broad base or a thin stalk. Our doctor will examine the area and recommend one—or a combination—of the following:
Precision snip excision (micro-excision)
What it is: The tag is snipped off at the base with sterile micro-scissors or a fine blade.
Anaesthesia: Usually not needed for very small tags; for larger ones we use a tiny injection of local anaesthetic or topical numbing cream.
Benefits: Instant removal, minimal trauma, excellent control on the neck, body and eyelids (with care).
Aftercare: A small dot of pressure and sterile dressing as needed; heals in 5–10 days.
Electrocautery / Electro-desiccation
What it is: A fine-tip device uses controlled heat to cauterise the base and seal tiny vessels.
Benefits: Precise, great for multiple small tags; reduces pinpoint bleeding.
Downtime: Usually forms a small superficial scab that falls off within 7–10 days.
Cryotherapy (freezing)
What it is: The tag is frozen with a cryo-device to destroy the tissue.
Benefits: No cutting; useful for small, superficial tags.
Note: May require 1–2 sessions; less commonly used on the eyelids.
Laser
What it is: Targeted energy ablates the tag base and coagulates blood vessels.
Benefits: Precise; reserved for specific anatomical or cosmetic needs.
Which method is best? For most body and neck tags, micro-excision with electrocautery offers the cleanest and fastest result. For very small tags or clusters, electrocautery alone can be ideal. For sensitive sites (e.g., eyelids), we use micro-techniques with eye protection and meticulous aftercare.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a skin tag?
A skin tag is a benign growth of the skin that can be flesh-colored or brown pigmented. They usually have a thin stalk or base. They are not painful or cause any problems unless they get caught on clothing or jewelry.
How is skin tag removal performed?
Skin tag removal is performed under local anaesthetic. The skin tag is excised or removed at the base of the stalk. The procedure is similar to a mole removal but the scar is usually smaller. The wound is usually small and often left to heal by itself. If the skin tag is larger, sutures or stitches may be required to close the wound.
How long does the procedure take?
The skin tag removal procedure is usually about 15 minutes and performed with you awake under a local anaesthetic.
Will there be a scar after skin tag removal?
There will be a small scar where the skin is excised or removed. This is initially red or pink but with time will become white or paler.
How much is a skin tag removal?
The price for a skin tag removal is £175 with each subsequent tag removal being £75. If there are any concerns with a tag, you may require histological analysis which is an additional charge.
Does the skin tag grow back?
It is very rare for a skin tag that is excised to grow back although you may develop further tags in other areas.
Can you remove tags around the anus?
We would recommend seeing a specialist colorectal surgeon for tags around this area as they may be hemorrhoids and treatment options may be different from skin tag removal.
