Breast Augmentation

Breast Augmentation or Enlargement is commonly known as a Boob Job. This is a procedure that involves using silicone breast implants to increase the size of the breasts. There are some alternative ways of increasing the breast size such as using fat transfer. When receiving a breast augmentation Manchester & Cheshire patients are put under a general anaesthetic and most patients will be able to go home the same day. The operation itself takes about 60 to 90 minutes to perform. Breast enlargement is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedures in the world. It is also one of the most popular procedures performed by our surgeons. Mr Reza Nassab, lead plastic surgeon at CLNQ, is well known for this breast procedure and the MiniAug procedure.

How Is Breast Augmentation Done?

At CLNQ in Cheshire & Manchester breast augmentations are performed under a general anaesthetic which means you will go to sleep to have this done. The procedure is usually a day case which means you will be discharged the same day. The surgeon will make an incision or cut around your natural breast fold then create a pocket for the breast implant. The incision is then stitched closed and dressing applied.

  • To help improve breast asymmetry or congenital breast shapes such as tuberous breasts

What are the risks of breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthetic. The procedure involves using a breast implant to increase the size of the breasts. During the consultation for your breast augmentation Cheshire & Manchester patients will discuss with their surgeon the potential risks listed below.

Bruising, Swelling, Bleeding

It is normal to get some swelling after any treatment and this usually takes a few weeks to settle.  Some patients may also experience bruising or bleeding which is can be related to medication being taken.  Some medicines such as aspirin and herbal supplements can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. A haematoma occurs if there is bleeding with the pocket.

Scar

There will be a permanent scar around the natural breast crease where the implant is inserted.  The scar heals well in most people but some people may develop raised or lumpy scarring known as hypertrophic or keloid scars.

Asymmetry

All patients have some degree of asymmetry between the breasts and sometimes following surgery these may become more noticeable or you may become more aware of these.  We will try to highlight some of these asymmetries preoperatively.  Many of these are beyond the control of the surgeon and based on your anatomy such as chest wall or rib differences, size differences, differing nipple positions and much more.

Change in Sensation

Any procedure can result in change in sensation to the skin in the surrounding area or nipple.  This is due to some of the sensory nerve being cut during the procedure to make room for the implant or swelling.  These changes may result in numbness or increased sensitivity.  They may be temporary or permanent.

Breast Implant Related Problems

Breast implants may have number of issues related to their use.  These may include: Capsular contracture; Rupture; Rare types of Cancers; Breast Implant Illness.  We will discuss these during your consultation.

Infection

Infections are uncommon following these procedures although they may occur.  You will usually be provided given antibiotics during the procedure and to take home with you afterwards.  Although very uncommon, if infection does occur there is a possibility that the implant may need to be removed.

Replacement

Breast implants will need replacing at some point in the future.  There is specific time period for this and each individual will be different.  The most common reasons for changing implants include patient choice such as wanting to change the size, changes with time or capsular contracture.

Changes with Time

There may be some changes with time, ageing, pregnancy or weight changes.  Your natural breasts will always be undergoing changes and breasts with implants will also always change. It is difficult to predict how the breast will change in each individual.

Breast Augmentation Frequently Asked Questions

When can I go back to the gym?

We recommend that no strenuous activity such as exercise or intercourse is undertaken during the first 6 weeks following surgery.  You can return back to the gym after 6 weeks but starting slowly and gradually building up again.

Do I need to wear any special bras?

We recommend you wear a good postoperative bra for the first 6 weeks following your surgery.  We recommend our CLNQ x Macom bras for this. You will also usually have a strap which sits on top of the bra above the breasts for the first 2 weeks.  This is used to try and prevent the implants from riding high in the initial recovery period.
